The Smith Family on Thanksgiving

Belle Snoozing

The weather has been just beautiful.  We have hardly even had a killing frost this fall.  The temperatures have been so mild, but that is going to change in the next day or so.   We have finished AIing on the fall cows and are now turning our attention to the sale bulls.  The weather has been almost too nice to be feeding the bulls.   Rennae and her family were  here for a few days at Thanksgiving.   Hope you all enjoy the holiday!

22007006

We've had lots of company this fall.  Amy, a friend of Amber's and her family came for a visit.  And Amber's Mom Natalie, from Green Bay and sister Tara, from Nashville were here a few weeks ago.

J2007 JUNIOR HIGH FOOTBALL TEAM

Cameron played football this year.  They had a very successful year, winning 3 games with 1 loss.  His number is 19.   He also was the student manager for the Rock County High School varsity football team.   He had a busy season!

NEBRASKA ANGUS TOUR

Smith Angus Ranch was a stop on the 2007 Nebraska Angus Tour.

The Tour Bus arrived at the ranch filled with enthusiastic Angus breeders!  Although the wind was blowing and the temperature was a little chilly, the tour went off without a hitch.

NEBRASKA STATE FAIR

Cameron and Diaz attended the Nebraska State Fair in Lincoln.  They got a purple ribbon and had a great time.

The 4-H Kids from Bassett that attended the State Fair:  Craig Hall, Lila Goos, Cameron Smith, Taylor Hart, and Harlee Hollenbeck

CAMERON AND DEUCE

Deuce has been a kind and gentle horse for Cameron while he was learning to ride.  The two of them are a great team......from driving cattle to pasture to getting cows in during AIing time.  They take good care of each other and there is nothing more endearing than a boy and his horse.

Cameron and Deuce are preparing for the Trail Class at the 2007 Rock County Fair.  In Trail you have a variety of obstacles that you and your horse must maneuver through.  Cameron is carefully studying the pattern.....concentrating on every detail.  Deuce looks like he is checking out the competition!

The horse and rider are in position and ready to begin their challenge.   The first obstacle is to open and shut a gate without dismounting.  Cameron is focused and feeling pretty confident.....they've done this a thousand times together when they were getting cows in to breed, but.........

Deuce is still checkin' out the competition!

Deuce quickly jumps to attention when Cameron lets him know that the Judge is ready to observe them as they make their way through the course.

After successfully making their way through the gate, they find a bridge that they have to cross.  Deuce starts over it immediately....making it look like a piece of cake......it really isn't!

Most ranch horses are scared to cross a bridge....they don't like the sound of their hooves on the bridge........Deuce makes it look easy........

After crossing the bridge without a problem, they encounter a large blue tarp that is suppose to resemble a puddle of water.  Deuce lowers his head for just a moment........checks out the tarp.......

and gingerly trots over it.....what's the big deal?!?!?!?

And finally, they have to back through three cones.   With gentle prodding from Cameron, Deuce backed up perfectly and only stepped on one of the cones.......

Congratulations on a job well done!

Bales on the Meadow at Linkes

Belle

Haying is in full swing right now.  We've had a few mechanical breakdowns, but the bales are really piling up.  Trevor and Amber adopted a new puppy...a Beagle...and they named her "Belle".  She is really cute and is adjusting pretty well to her new surroundings.

Kent's Dad, George Smith was inducted into the Nebraska Sandhills Cowboy Hall of Fame on July 21, 2007.

2007

We finished up AIing on one group of cows and are now in the process of AIing some heifers.  We've gotten some really good rains, and the grass is taller than it has been in years.  It looks like it is ready to hay right now and it isn't even July yet.  Kent's cousins, Nancy and Kris came up to look over the Van Norman property over west.  We had a good visit and enjoyed seeing them.

Cameron and Queenie

Cameron went out and brought Queenie back in to display at Expo.  Queenie was his 4-H Breeding Heifer two years ago.  They are still good friends and hopefully she will help him halter break this year's breeding heifer.

HAPPY EASTER  The weather has continued to be a little chilly for this time of year, but the weatherman assures us that warmer weather is on the way.  We celebrated Easter at home.  Amber invited Whitney, a friend from the Chicago area to spend some time on the ranch.  She flew in on Saturday and she and Trevor, Amber and Cameron paired out, and got some bulls in the corrals for delivery.
